Super-absorbent quick-drying sphagnum moss holds twenty times its weight in water
Living in wetlands, bogs, temperate conifer forests, or taiga, sphagnum captures and stores water temporarily. Astonishingly absorbent, sphagnum can hold over twenty times its weight in water. A layer of hollow, wicking, spirally reinforced chambers collects and temporarily stores large volumes of water without collapsing under its weight. When moisture input ceases, rapid water loss by evaporation follows.
