Beavers engineer wetland mosaics that filter and regulate hydrological flows increasing diversity and ecosystem resilience.

Beavers are ecosystem engineers constructing multiple permeable, impermanent dams along a flowing waterway by harvesting collected materials. The barriers slow down and back up the water flow but do not stop it completely. The slower-moving water is filtered and purified as it infiltrates the soil, recharging and elevating. The higher water table mitigates wildfire and drought risk and stimulates revegetation, improving soil health and carbon sequestration. The presence of upstream dams reduces the likelihood of downstream flooding. The recaptured resources become locally available, stimulating biodiversity and complexity and benefiting multiple stakeholders instead of rapidly exiting the system in a linear flow. As keystone species, beavers foster cooperative relationships. Increased resilience results and regenerative capacity building help the entire system.
The Beaver's ecosystem engineering could inspire land developers and architects to create more regenerative and integrated designs.
