Impressive Method of Distribution Optimization
System - Sistema
Via a simple algorithm, the slime mold's branching connections approximate a network that optimizes the organism's near-term investment and long-term operating resources.
Plasmodial slime mold
Plasmodial slime mold spreads out over a large surface area in search of food. Once food sources are discovered, the slime mold optimizes its network by forming thicker tubes between food sources. Connections between food sources take the shortest route, and these complex highways become robust while others will be minimized and eventually removed altogether. A mathematical model that mimics the slime mold's food search behavior may help designers and engineers figure out an optimal solution for energy or transportation systems.
What if we designed our distribution systems with optimization rather than minimization?
