When the bromeliad can't obtain the resources, the resources come to the bromeliad.
Bromeliads live on branches within the rainforest canopy to gain access to light. While water is abundant in the canopy, the lack of soil requires alternate strategies for capturing nutrients. The bromeliad creates mutualistic relationships by creating a catch basin to collect debris and other nutrients. By leveraging the need for water, the bromeliad attracts aquatic and other species and provides them with the necessary resources for their growth. In return, the bromeliad has access to nutrients that would otherwise be provided by soil.
