NDL 149: Carnivorous Bromeliad
Traps Insects with Slippery Surfaces
Traps Insects with Slippery Surfaces
Process - Proceso
The carnivorous bromeliad lives in acidic, nutrient-poor soil and humid conditions of bogs and sandy soils. It has an interesting strategy for attracting, trapping, and digesting prey.
The lip on a funnel structure attracts insects and causes them to slide into a catch basin. The walls of the funnel structure incorporate a waxy layer that contaminates the feet of insects, causing them to slide into an acidic liquid in its center.
