Parabolic Shape Focuses Heat Energy
Parabolic Shape Focuses Heat Energy
Form - Forma
The leaf shape and reflective qualities concentrate solar energy where the plant needs it most, allowing for the bud to flower once in its lifetime.
The Hawaiʻi silversword is found on the mountain Haleakalā on the island of Maui at elevations above 2,100 m (6,900 ft). It flowers only once in its lifespan of 20 to 90 years. To manage the lower temperatures of the mountain, it has adapted to collect solar energy. Curved leaves with reflecting silver hairs grow in a spiral pattern to form a paraboloid wall. Thanks to the plant's angle and opening, the sunlight is concentrated on the bud. This shape works like a reflector oven, focusing the solar energy where the plant needs it the most.
